Water Meeting All Wet
By David Wiwchar PORT ALBERNI — Only a few people showed up for an Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District open house Wednesday night to discuss the latest water study.
The meeting, hosted by Koers & Associates Engineering, presented options facing Alberni Valley water systems and water users.
In order to meet future needs and come into compliance with the heath authority's drinking water standards, the system needs between $19 and $40 million worth of upgrades over the next 25 years.
Engineers recommend forming a regional water authority that includes Port Alberni, Cherry Creek and Beaver Creek, and using Bainbridge Lake and China Creek as the main water sources, with Catalysts pipe from Sproat Lake serving as a second water source.
A filtration plant would be constructed to meet VIHA guidelines, but with most of the other infrastructure already in place, this option is the lowest price at $19 million.
The ACRD will continue their review of the issue and hope more people will get involved in the discussions.
