Seiners Scoop Sockeye

By David Wiwchar PORT ALBERNI — The big seiners returned for another shot at the sockeye run Monday.

They began a 24-hour fishery, which could be extended.

More than 260,000 sockeye have already been caught in commercial fisheries.

Last week DFO upgraded the run size estimate for the fourth time, and a final test fishery this week could upgrade the run to 1.25 million sockeye.

Despite the increase, DFO is not increasing the Aboriginal quota and has ordered the tidal portion of the Somass River closed to all fishing.

More than 422,000 sockeye have made it back to spawning grounds at Sproat and Great Central Lakes, 27,000 short of the upgraded goal.

It is ironic that DFO would continue to leave the aborininal people out of picture when there are enonomic opportunities to be had when the fish runs are greater. It seems that our Canadian Governments are still carrying on with their Colonial attitudes towards the First Nations people.

Sidney Douglas must be independently wealthy and carefree about how his tax dollars are spent. I think he forgets how dependent first nations are on our hard dollars which come directly out of our pockets.
the cash sales of fish by Alberni Natives is a bonanza, and is not deducted from any monies gifted to them out my pocket.
Equaility will never be achieved by continous double standards
