Black Press Won’t Take Port Alberni For Granted

David Black’s decision to enter the Port Alberni newspaper market forces us to ask one serious question: what did CanWest do – or not do – to lose complete control of a market it dominated for years?
As you can see by our top story today, Black Press Vancouver Island has confirmed it will launch a free weekly newspaper in Port Alberni – a city with an estimated population of nearly 18,000. This estimate excludes regional district residents.
Until Black’s announcement, CanWest Global Communications Corp. ran the Valley’s only two traditional mainstream print newspapers: the Alberni Valley Times and the Pennyworth Shopper.
...

All Hands On Deck In Tofino

This ship we call Tofino has run aground.
The cause is water or the lack thereof, the very thing that is meant to keep this tourist town afloat.
At this ship’s wheel is Mayor John Fraser, bearing the burden for this crisis and former actions by citizens and councils whom through mismanagement, petty squabbling, neglect, poor decision making or any other reason got our town to this point.
Ultimately, yes, Fraser is responsible for what is happening. He is, after all, our mayor.
Yes, he is the one responsible for sending out the orders to close shop.
And yes, the buck stops with him.
Unfortunately, he is not the only one who is supposed to be sailing this ship.
His crew, his officers and first mates are senior administrators and councillors.
Oddly enough, many are nowhere to be seen – disappeared, like the very sirens that lured us to this point.
For obvious reasons, mainly their resignations this past spring, we have few administrators: no treasurer, no planner and no superintendent of public works until Sept. 5.
We do have six councillors, however.
But where are they?
...

Sometimes, even then, we ignore what’s happening and blame others for the consequences. Speaking about warnings, here’s another one: “Water levels are critical; Essential water use only is permitted.”...

Just Whom Is Tofino Dealing With?

This Thursday, a team of consultants – acting on behalf of unnamed and unknown developers – will hold an open house at the Tin Wis Best Western Resort over a proposed master-development plan for 215 acres of private land at Cox Bay.
At this meeting, the team will introduce itself, informing the public about the project’s background information and future plans. They’ll likely also ask for some public comment.
It appears that the public will learn almost everything they need to know about the proposed project except for one important point: the developers’ identities.
...

Good News Really Happens -- Seriously

The news isn’t always good: an accident that killed two people on Highway No. 4 Friday is just one example of how the media must often report “bad news.” For readers – and even writers – of news, this kind of tragedy can be more than depressing. Luckily, a few things happened on the coast this weekend that proved good news does happen – really. I’ll take a few moments to tell you about them. Sunday, Tofino Bus and Greyhound Canada formally began a new partnership that will see the former become an agent for the latter and, in the process, become the dominant coach operator in the region. This is good news, big news....
