Wednesday night, Port Alberni beat out three other Pacific coast communities, despite being included in what Hockeyville judge Hayley Wickenheiser called “the weakest region.” “Despite its industry struggling, Port Alberni made its hockey arena in hard times by raising $2.7 million,” said Catriona Le May Doan, Canadian Olympic medalist and a Hockeyville judge who voted for Port Alberni.

The Regional District of Alberni-Clayoquot is asking the federal government for $4.1 million to upgrade Tofino Airport’s runway.
Bob Harper, ACRD administrator, said the region submitted the application to Transport Canada's Air Transport Assistance Program this week.
If successful, the money will be used to fix two problems on one of the airport's three, 5,000-foot runways...
